How to Clean Guttering Safely — UK Trade Method
Blocked guttering causes damp on external walls and rot in fascias. Annual autumn cleaning takes an hour with the right kit.
Step-by-step method
1. Ground method — gutter vac
A wet/dry vacuum with 6m telescopic wands (£120–£180) cleans single storey without a ladder. Screwfix McCulloch or Draper are the trade picks.
2. Ladder method
A trestle ladder with stand-off arms saves the gutter from crushing. Never work above shoulder height on the ladder.
3. Scoop and bag
Rubber gloves + gutter scoop. Bag as you go — don't drop leaves on flowerbeds.
4. Flush and check flow
Garden hose into gutter to flush residue. Watch downpipes — a blocked downpipe won't clear with a gutter scoop; use drain rods.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I clean gutters?+
Once a year in November after leaf-fall. Twice if you have deciduous trees within 10m.
Are gutter guards worth it?+
Mesh guards work well against leaves. Foam inserts trap moss and make matters worse — avoid.
