How to Fix a Dripping Tap — UK Trade Method
A dripping tap wastes 15 litres a day. The fix is a £2 washer or a £8 ceramic cartridge — 20 minutes with a screwdriver.
Step-by-step method
1. Identify tap type
Ceramic disc (quarter turn from off to on) or traditional (multiple turns). Different internals.
2. Isolate water
Close under-sink isolator, or main stopcock. Open tap to drain.
3. Remove handle
Pop off the coloured H/C insert with a small screwdriver. Undo the retaining screw. Lift off handle.
4. Swap the cartridge or washer
Traditional: unscrew the bonnet, unscrew the jumper, swap the ½" rubber washer (Belfast/1955 pattern). Ceramic: undo the retaining nut, lift out cartridge, fit identical replacement (bring old one to merchant).
5. Reassemble and test
Grease O-rings with silicone tap grease. Reassemble in reverse. Open water slowly.

How do I know which ceramic cartridge to buy?+
Take the old one to Screwfix or a plumber's merchant. Diameter (usually 25 or 35mm), spline count and height must match.
Why does my tap still drip after new washer?+
The brass seat inside the tap body is scored. Reface with a tap seat reamer (£10 from Toolstation) or replace the whole tap.
