Step-by-step method

1. ErP 92% minimum

All new boilers must be minimum 92% seasonal efficiency (ErP). Most modern condensing boilers meet this easily.

2. Time and temperature control

Programmer AND room thermostat mandatory. Not just an on/off switch.

3. Choose ONE of four extras

For combis: (a) weather compensation, (b) load compensation, (c) smart controls (Nest, Hive, Tado), (d) flue gas heat recovery.

4. Weather compensation

External sensor adjusts boiler flow temp to outside temp. Saves 4–8%. £120 fit.

5. Load compensation

Uses room thermostat to modulate flow temp. Built into most modern controls. Saves 5–10%.
