Step-by-step method

Banging / kettling

Limescale on the heat exchanger causes local boiling. Descaler treatment (Sentinel X800) + inhibitor top-up. £30 DIY.

Clicking on warm-up

Normal expansion — pipes rubbing against joists or clips. Wrap felt or foam around pipe at contact points. Cosmetic, not urgent.

Gurgling

Trapped air in that radiator. Bleed it. If it re-occurs weekly, your system has a slow leak drawing air.

Whistling

Restriction — a TRV set too low or a partially closed valve. Open lockshield or upgrade TRV to a full-bore modern unit.

Frequently asked questions

Is a noisy boiler dangerous?+

Kettling isn't immediately dangerous but shortens boiler life and reduces efficiency 10–15%. Fix within a month.

Will a magnetic filter stop radiator noise?+

Only if noise is caused by sludge — yes. Won't help with limescale or air-based noise.
