1. Free install from water company
Call your water company (Thames, Anglian, Yorkshire etc). They'll fit a meter within 3 months, free. No cost to homeowner.
2. Trial period

3. Rule of thumb
If your household has fewer people than bedrooms, metering usually saves money. Family of 4 in a 3-bed = likely to lose out.
4. Where is the meter fitted?
On the rising main, usually in kitchen cupboard under sink or outside boundary box. Depends on rising main route.
5. Reading your meter
Digital or dial. Read monthly. Water bill is £ per m³ + fixed daily standing charge.
