How to Fix a Burst Pipe — Emergency UK Guide
A burst pipe leaks 1,000+ litres an hour. Here is the immediate first-aid to protect your home before a plumber arrives.
Step-by-step method
1. Turn off the stopcock
Kitchen sink usually. Clockwise. See our stopcock guide if you can't find it.
2. Open all downstairs cold taps
Drains the system quickly, reduces pressure on the burst.
3. Turn off the heating
Boiler and immersion off. If the burst is on the heating side, drain via a downstairs radiator bleed screw.
4. Temporary patch
SylGlas amalgamating tape wrapped tight, or a pipe-repair clamp (Rothenberger, £8) with rubber patch. Both hold for 24–48 hours.
5. Call a plumber
A slip-repair coupler (Tectite or Yorkshire slip) allows same-day permanent fix without draining further.
